We provide expert residential bat control services in Kansas City Metro & Lawrence
Are you hearing squeaking noises and scratches in your attic? It could be bats roosting in your home. Bats enter your home looking for shelter from the elements and protection from predators. They can find their way into your home through a crack or gap as small as 1/4” . While bats are definitely not something you want lurking in your attic, they are a very valuable species. The main reason bats are valuable to humans is bats eat lots of pests. Some bats consume up to 3,000 insects every night, which is ½ their body weight! They also protect crops from insect infestations and control the mosquito population. Bats are a migratory species and protected by federal law.
Bats are often associated with carrying diseases. The most common are rabies and histoplasmosis. Rabies is a dangerous and even fatal disease. The transmission of rabies from bats to humans is not thought to be a high percentage. In reality bats contract rabies far less than other animals, only about 5% of bats submitted for testing are infected with the rabies virus. Histoplasmosis is a respiratory infection caused by the Histoplasma Capsulatum fungus that lives in bat droppings. Besides Histoplasmosis, bat guano can cause an extremely bad odor in your home. Bats defecate up to 30 times a day and a buildup of bat guano can eventually lead to a collapse of beams and ceilings. Bat droppings also attract other pests such as cockroaches which can lead to another infestation.
There are approximately 900 different species of bats found in the world, and 45 species which can be found in the United States. The 3 most common species of bats in the Kansas City Metro area are the Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus), Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus), and Evening Bat (Nycticeius humeralis).
The most common bat in our region is the Big Brown Bat. The Big Brown Bat is a large, dark brown bat with long, glossy fur, short black ears, with broad wings and nose. Big Brown Bats are usually around 4-5 inches in length, with a 12-14 inch wingspan, weighing only 13-18 grams. Bats usually birth their offspring during May- June. Nursery colonies are usually located in manmade structures such as houses, churches, and barns. They often roost in your home during the day, while leaving to feed at night. They feed mainly on beetles, moths, flies, wasps, mosquitos, and other flying insects. Big Brown Bats will not feed in heavy rain or when the temperature is below 50 degrees. The Big Brown Bat, unlike most bats, can survive subfreezing temperatures and usually do not begin to hibernate until November/December.
