Stop Doing These to Keep Mosquitoes Away

Mosquito season is here and that only means one thing — mosquito bites. Mosquito bites are not only itchy and painful but can carry life-threatening illnesses. Mosquitoes kill more than 750,000 people in the world and account for 17% of the world’s burden of infectious diseases. Thousands of people unknowingly do things that attract mosquitoes. Don’t be one of those numbers and instead stop doing these things to keep mosquitoes away.

Not Wearing Mosquito Repellent

One of the easiest ways to keep mosquitoes away is to wear DEET or other mosquito repellents. DEET if used correctly can efficiently keep mosquitoes (and ticks) away. Entomologists advise people only to use it sparsely on your body and clothes. Ingredients in repellents that entomologists and the CDC recommend are picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol and 2-undecanone. If you are not sure what to look for, the safest option is to find a product that has an Environmental Protection Agency approved label.

Not Draining Stagnant Water

Mosquitoes love standing, stagnant water because it is the perfect breeding ground. There does not need to be much standing water for these pesky insects to breed. All it takes is a small birdbath or even water small puddles in your plants for mosquitoes to reproduce. To avoid stagnant water in your yard, drain or dump out any standing water you see in containers, pools or plants daily.

Not Adding Plants That Repel Mosquitoes

If you prefer the natural way of repelling mosquitoes, then you need to add plants that naturally repel them away. Plants like citronella, lavender, lemongrass and rosemary disinterest mosquitoes and other pests like bees. A good thing to remember is that plants or citronella scented candles will not keep mosquitoes completely away from your yard. That’s why it is important to have another method of keeping mosquitoes away.

Not Spraying Your Yard for Mosquitoes

Keeping up with the maintenance of keeping mosquitoes away can be time-consuming and tiring. Skip all the extra hassle of repelling mosquitoes by working with pest control to treat your yard seasonally. The best part of pest control spraying your yard is that they are also riding your property of ticks and fleas at the same time.
